Whimsical Wednesday

Did you see what I did there? I used alliteration. : )

Today you are going to type up your two metaphor poems. Please be sure to type up and save each poem individually in your student directory. Once you have typed them up, I would like you to turn them in with the rubrics. Then I would like to choose one to post to your blog. You may post both if you wish.

Next I would like for you to comment on 10 other blogs. Try to choose blogs that you did not already comment on the other day. Be sure to provide one positive statement about a classmate's poem and one suggestion. Keep you comments appropriate.

Finally, take a minute to read the following poem. Any thoughts?

In Blackwater Woods

Look, the trees
are turning
their own bodies
into pillars

of light,
are giving off the rich
fragrance of cinnamon
and fulfillment,

the long tapers
of cattails
are bursting and floating away over
the blue shoulders

of the ponds,
and every pond,
no matter what its
name is, is

nameless now.
Every year
everything
I have ever learned

in my lifetime
leads back to this: the fires
and the black river of loss
whose other side

is salvation,
whose meaning
none of us will ever know.
To live in this world

you must be able
to do three things:
to love what is mortal;
to hold it

against your bones knowing
your own life depends on it;
and, when the time comes to let it go,
to let it go.

  1. This poem is really descriptive and has a lot of meaning. I like how the idea doesn't stop at one line, rather takes up an entire stanza.

  2. I feel the poem is trying to describe nature's life to our daily lives. How beautiful the trees look and the light streaming into the forest. It was also very descriptive as well.

  3. This poem leaves me wondering what the author is exactly feeling. It has a lot of strong words. I think the author also did a great job writing it and placing their puctuation.

  4. This poem is pretty awesome because of the description. You can tell that the poet knew every detail of what she was describing.

  5. This poem has a certain naturalist flair that has become rare in this age of modern poetry. I bless anyone who still appreciates this genre of poetry.

  7. It's okay, I guess. I like that the end of every stanza leads into the next one. Thats pretty dope.

  8. I can really feel the emotion through the great describtion. I find the transtions between the stanzas a little awkward.
